There’s A New Pro In Town

There’s a new face on the pickleball courts. Savannah native, Trey Maust, joined The Landings Club’s Court Sports program as a teaching professional two weeks ago. Trey, a 2023 graduate of Point University in West Point, Georgia had been a teaching pro at Savannah Yacht Club where his father, Eric, has been the head professional for close to twenty years.

According to head pickleball professional Alex Fox, “I am beyond thrilled to have Trey join our team of pickleball professionals! His energy and professionalism are simply unmatched and his laughter and passion for pickleball are contagious. Being on the court with Trey is a sure-fire way to brighten your day.”

A tennis player since childhood, Trey started playing pickleball two years ago. He has coached tennis since he was thirteen, when he started working with children at a youth camp. As he got a little older, he worked with adults, helping them improve their power games. Initially, Trey will coach both tennis and pickleball, but over time will focus primarily on pickleball, which, as he says, “is my passion.”

Already known to our pickleball pros, Trey played pickleball with Alex Fox and Bradley Morris for the last two years, before joining the Franklin Creek team. He and Bradley teamed up in a money tournament in South Bridge last November and won. He also played in a tournament in Macon with Krista Poppell where they came in fourth out of over twenty teams.

Trey, who has three siblings, comes from a family of athletes. His father played D1 tennis at East Tennessee State University and his mother was a standout Junior Olympic swimmer. Trey’s sister is currently a D1 swimmer at Gardner Web University. Trey himself was a 4 Star recruit who starred at Point University where he is a member of the school’s Hall of Fame. His DUPR rating is currently 5.3.

The timing of Trey’s arrival is perfect. It appears construction of the new courts might actually become a reality this year. New Neighbors introduces more new players to pickleball every month and young players are invading the courts in increasing numbers, so it is reasonable to assume that the demand for lessons is going to increase. The youth invasion continues to gain momentum as Court Sports is currently running a Junior Pickleball Academy on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. The Academy, which is open to children ages four and up, begins February 4th and runs for eleven consecutive weeks. The registration fee is $250 for one session a week or $425 for two. Drop ins are welcome at $40 a day.

Two final notes: Don’t forget the Mixed Doubles club Championship on February 22nd and the World Pickleball Tour which is sponsored by The Landings Club. The WPT tournament, which runs from February 28th through March 2nd, showcases players from all over the country. If you are not playing, come to Franklin Creek and watch four days of extremely competitive pickleball. The Men and Women's Double Club Championships will be played on March 15th and 16th.
